Players select Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile as a starting partner and utilize Mega Evolution to temporarily alter Pokémon attributes during combat. Exploration covers shopping districts, dining locations, and open wild zones, alongside interactions with established characters and organizations. Nighttime gameplay introduces the Z-A Royale tournament, which requires preparation through daily catching and training activities.
