A compact home video game console known for being the first to adopt the CD-ROM format for gaming via the TurboGrafx-CD add-on. Initially launched with HuCard cartridges, the system expanded its capabilities with the CD-ROM attachment, which required a separate System Card to load BIOS data. A later hardware revision, the TurboDuo, combined the base console and CD unit into a single device and included updated firmware to support "Super CD" games. An additional upgrade in Japan, the Arcade Card, enabled a small number of more advanced titles. CD games were region-free but depended on the proper system card. Both the Duo and original CD add-on units provided built-in memory for game saves and included a data management screen accessible at startup. The system runs on an 8-bit CPU with dual 16-bit graphics processors, allowing up to 482 colors on screen from a palette of 512.
