The island has been seized by the renegade special forces unit FOXHOUND, who are holding hostages and threatening to launch a nuclear strike using the experimental mecha Metal Gear REX unless their demands are met. The player guides Snake through the nuclear weapons disposal facility, using stealth, environmental cover, and gadgets such as infrared goggles and a cardboard box to avoid enemy detection. When Snake enters an enemy's field of vision, the game shifts into an alert mode that draws hostile attention, requiring the player to hide until an evasion timer expires and infiltration resumes. Beyond the stealth-focused exploration, the game includes set-piece firefight sequences against armed opponents, with combat against large groups of enemies often resulting in significant damage to Snake.
