A role-playing video game developed by Square for the original PlayStation, often described as a hybrid of Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil, with its director Takashi Tokita characterizing its style as a cinematic RPG. The game is set primarily on a map of Manhattan limited to specific destinations, where walking over certain locations can trigger random encounters with enemies that materialize on the same screen the player navigates, eliminating a separate battle screen. Combat uses a pausable real-time system governed by an Active Time Bar that determines when the player can act, allowing the main character Aya to be repositioned between turns to dodge attacks; on each turn the player can attack with an equipped weapon, use Parasite Energy for defense or offense, consume items, change equipment, or attempt to escape. The story follows Aya Brea, a rookie NYPD officer, who on December 24, 1997 attends an opera at Carnegie Hall where audience members spontaneously combust, leaving her, her date, and the lead actress Melissa Pearce as survivors. Aya confronts Melissa, who mutates into a beast, declares herself Eve, and flees into the sewers. The following day, Aya and her partner Daniel Dollis consult Dr. Hans Klamp at the Museum of Natural History about mitochondria, then pursue Eve to Central Park, where she forces a gathered audience's mitochondria to rebel, turning the crowd into a slimy orange mass; Aya is knocked unconscious during a chase, and Manhattan is subsequently evacuated due to the ongoing threat.
