The story follows Donkey Kong as he travels to Ingot Isle during a gold rush, is swept underground, and rescues Odd Rock, who is revealed to be the teenage Pauline, a singer whose voice is sought by the mining corporation VoidCo. and its president Void Kong to awaken the Banandium Root, a magical object said to grant the wishes of its wielder. Players control the gorilla Donkey Kong as he searches for Banandium Gems, golden banana-shaped diamonds, across sandbox-like levels arranged in themed underground layers such as ice, lava, and tropical biomes. Donkey Kong can roll, punch, slap the terrain, pick up and throw objects, and climb most surfaces, and he gains five animal-themed transformations from non-player character elders: a gorilla form for increased strength, a zebra form for increased speed, an ostrich form for gliding and dropping egg bombs, an elephant form for inhaling and spitting terrain, and a snake form for increased jump height, all of which can be swapped at any time but are limited by an energy meter. Players complete missions, solve puzzles, and fight enemies to collect Banandium Gems, which are also found through exploration and story progression and can be used to upgrade abilities from a skill tree.
