A video game that combines a reputation-based morality system with first-person action gameplay. The player controls Jericho Cross, a former American Civil War veteran and wanted outlaw who is bitten by the vampire lord Lazarus Malkoth during a train robbery in the Arizona Territory in 1876, leaving him to slowly transform into a vampire. After being conscripted into the ancient vampire-hunting order known as the Darkwatch, Jericho begins with neutral vampiric abilities including Blood Shield, Vampire Jump, and Blood Vision, while collecting the souls of slain enemies fills a blood meter that can activate new powers and restore health. Throughout the game, choices between good and evil morality determine which Brands Jericho acquires, with the good path offering powers such as Silver Bullet, Fear, Mystic Armor, and Vindicator, and the evil path offering Blood Frenzy, Turn, Black Shroud, and Soul Stealer. The narrative, narrated by Peter Jason, follows Jericho's struggle to retain his humanity or fall into darkness as he pursues Lazarus, who was once a Roman founder of the Darkwatch before being possessed by a demon and transformed into a vampire lord, alongside Darkwatch agent Cassidy Sharp and Shadow, Jericho's undead horse.
